International Fluids Consortium (IFC) Announces Engine Oil Specifications

Southfield, Michigan, U.S.A. – The International Fluids Consortium (IFC) is proud to announce four new engine oil specifications. The IFC brings together Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), whose member companies represent 14 leading OEM brands globally, with fluid additive providers, fluid manufacturers, marketers, and industry supporters to create an improved system for developing critical fluid specifications to meet new and innovative vehicle technology.  The need for new specifications is driven by consumer expectations, government regulations, and OEM technological advancements.

Developed in close collaboration with IFC’s OEM and affiliate members, these new specifications, internationally focused and implemented globally, pave the way for the future of engine technology. With a strong focus on fuel economy and cleaner air related to achieving carbon neutrality, the IFC’s engine oil specifications set the roadmap for advancements in the mobility segment.

Specifications Overview

Specifications Designed for Today and the Future

  • GEO-1 is intended for use with gasoline Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and aligns with the ILSAC GF-6 and JASO GLV-1 specifications, extending the use of fluid technology aimed at improving fuel economy and enhancing engine capabilities.  It supports engine oil requirements for a majority of currently manufactured and existing vehicles.
  • GEO-2 is similar to GEO-1 yet offers improved compatibility with emissions control hardware such as Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF) and aligns with current European ACEA specifications.
  • GEO-3 builds on GEO-2, introducing the next level of performance with improved fuel efficiency while meeting evolving vehicle technology.
  • GEO-4 is aimed at further improving fuel economy and adapting to new engine technologies. The improvement possible with GEO-4 is equivalent to using an SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade oil and achieving the fuel economy improvement of an SAE 0W-8 viscosity grade oil.

The IFC specifications cover a broader range of viscosity grades, including those below SAE 0W-16, addressing both low and traditional viscosity requirements. They are designed to service the majority of current and newly developed combustion engine technologies in the worldwide marketplace and will support the industry for years to come.

Collaborative Efforts and Technical Excellence

The IFC Engine Oil Technical Committee, comprising OEM members, additive companies, and testing laboratories, introduced new test technology and re-evaluated legacy engine and bench testing requirements based on technical merit.  These changes allowed new formulation technology over a broader range of base stocks, providing more flexibility in formulation while improving product quality for OEMs and ultimately consumers.  IFC’s active OEM members welcome the collaborative approach and support the use of IFC-certified fluids.

Key Details and Launch Timeline

  • Four New Specifications:  GEO-1 through GEO-4.   Setting new industry standards.
  • Registration for Licensing: Open September 2024.
  • First Allowable Availability: Starting January 1, 2025.

With the launch of these new engine oil specifications, IFC is now turning its attention to development of EV fluid specifications and a long-term roadmap aligned with achieving carbon neutrality in the mobility segment and addressing various government regulations related to transportation.
